DIY: To Tile or Not to Tile?

Remodeling can be an expensive process, so it can be very tempting to do some things yourself instead of hiring a professional. Laying tile can be one of those things people try to do as a diy project and can look easier than it is, so here are some tips to help you decide whether you should do it yourself or leave it to the pros.

Some areas will be more difficult than others:

Easier
-Dry areas
-Floors
-Decorative rather than functional backsplashes
-Using tiles in the 4”-12” range are easier to manage
-Ceramic and porcelain tiles, as opposed to stone

Harder
-Wet areas where leakage may occur
-Walls
-Small/mosaic tiles
-Stone tiles which are heavy and difficult to cut

If you decide to try your hand at laying tile, first try it out in a discreet, seldom seen place to get some practice in. Additional tips are to use pre-mixed mortar, having a good subfloor and using plastic tile spacers to impose the correct distance between tiles.
